A Penny From the Ground, A Hug From Above: A Tribute to a Mother’s Love

Last week, I had a meaningful encounter with a very dear friend of mine. She lost her mother a few years ago, and even though time has passed, her love and presence still linger in the most beautiful ways.

During our meeting, she handed me a small package — inside it were 50 pennies. With a soft smile, she said:

"My mother used to collect these pennies. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect way to spread them around as little messages of luck for those who find them.”

My heart swelled. I knew exactly what to do.

So I’ve started leaving these pennies in special little bundles — simple colorful cards with the message:

"A penny from the ground, a hug from above."
Finders keepers — this one’s for you.

Each one carries more than just copper. They carry love, memory, magic, and hope. I like to believe that whoever finds them is meant to — that they’re tiny signs from the universe (and maybe from a mom watching from above) to keep going, to believe, to feel hugged.

This small act is part of The Word Rocks Project, where kindness travels far through seemingly small gestures. These pennies are more than coins — they are messages of connection, wrapped in care and carried by love.

If you find one, may it bring you comfort. And if you feel inspired, consider leaving a little piece of hope for someone else, too.
